2010 Season Begins at NC State February 20th 3pm
Recent News 2010 Outlook - Nov 22, 2009The Mountaineers have concluded their fall season and are looking forward to a Spring 2010 season full of promise. The team returns some seasoned players along with talented new comers. Along with new players, the addition of two coaches will be vital to the team's success in the coming season. Here is what you can expect to see on the field starting on February 20th, 2010: Attack: The attack is young, but balanced. Jonathan Meisner returns for his senior season looking to strengthen the attack at any spot with his creative dodging along with his endurance that gives him four quarters of full speed lacrosse. Griffin Wilt brings size and solid stick skills to provide solid dodging, feeding, and great finishing ability on the crease. Liam O'Toole also provides great size and strength along with the ability to pass and shoot with defenders on his hands. The attack unit also has speed courtesy of Kameron Singer, Justin Leath, and David Ferguson. Singer, a freshman from Winston-Salem has great dodging ability and becomes more and more dangerous as his shot on the run improves. Leath and Ferguson are two versatile players who can dodge and feed as well as help the midfield unit. Brian Maehr is a crafty attackman who brings enthusiasm and lifts his teammates around him in adverse situations. Midfield: The Mountaineer midfield is a mix of veteran players and young athletes who are a threat to score at any time. Senior Timothy Kihlstrom returns for a final year of tenacious ground ball and defensive skills combined with an aggressive nose for the goal. Kihlstrom along with Junior Matt Youngblood are expected to provide solid two-way midfield performance on both the defensive and offensive sides of the field. Freshmen Brian Spellman and Will Colvill offer creative dodging and Colvill adds fire power with his outside shot. Patrick Costello and Peter DeRose return to the game after several years away but continue to improve and contribute as the season progresses. Robert Duncan continues to be a role model on the practice field with his relentless work ethic and dedication to improving both his own abilities and the teams'. Defense: Junior net minder Paul Palmer returns to find a revamped defense with seasoned veterans and young talent. Derek Chamberlin and Alex Gallagher have game proven experience to relieve Palmer at any time. The poles are lead by Junior Tyler Southern who moves down from Long Stick Midfield to offer outstanding one on one defense. Sophomores Seth Flynn and Ryan Stephens return for 2010 vastly improved and both offer aggressive defense combined with outstanding "team first" attitudes. Braden Reno continues to throw great checks and is looked to as the team's go-to take away defenseman. Dylan Rollins and David Russell provide great relief for the defense and contend for a starting position every day. The Long Stick Midfield duties will be shared by Sophomores Ryan Delaney and Heath Dills along with freshman Will Long. Delaney is a great take away defenseman capable of stopping the opposing team's best midfielder and creating offense from the take away. He also is a vacuum for ground balls off of the face-off. Dills, a converted short stick, has made noise with his athleticism and the ability to learn the defense at a stunning pace. Long provides great support and allows for the defense to play aggressively constantly without overextending. Coaches Robert Simpson and Brandon Wilkerson have done an exemplary job of working with so many new faces and creating a simple yet effective game plan that provides hope for the future of Appalachian State Lacrosse. Mountaineers Storm Back For Close Victory - Nov 21, 2009 Senior Timothy Kihlstrom held on to the ball in the final seconds of the game for the first win of his career over SELC North Division rival UNC Charlotte. Freshman Griffin Wilt gave the team a hat trick to lead the scoring attack and fellow freshman Derek Chamberlin proved that he is ready to handle collegiate goaltending with an amazing first half. The game extremely close with neither team leading by more than two goals and the lead only changing in the last few minutes of the game when Appalachian State went on top 8-7. Though UNCC held the advantage in time of possession, the Black and Gold held the advantage in penalties, ground balls, and face-offs (winning 16-19). Paul Palmer provided great relief in the second half to keep the 49ers from mounting a come back at the end of the contest. The Mountaineers conclude the fall season at 3-3. The Apps start the spring season on February 20th at NC State and we will face UNC Charlotte on March 25th in Boone. Thanks to all those who attended the game and supported us this fall! Spring 2010 Schedule - Nov 19, 2009 The Appalachian State Men's lacrosse team will start off the 2010 spring season in Raleigh, North Carolina when they take on North Carolina State University. The team is looking forward to a tough and diverse schedule that includes teams from North and South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. The Mountaineers will face five teams that participated in the SELC playoff tournament, including runner-up Elon University. A first ever will be when the Apps take on division opponent UNC Charlotte on Thursday March 25 under the lights at home. Mark your calendars and come out and support your Mountaineers! Apps Unable to Come Back at UNCG - Nov 9, 2009 On a unseasonably warm day in Greensboro, the Appalachian State Mountaineers would let the UNC Greensboro get out to a big head start that, despite a strong second half come back, would prove too much for ASU. The team would actually have the first possession of the ball but a turnover would lead to a UNCG fast break that turned into a Spartan goal. UNCG rattled off the next few goals and the score at the end of the first half would be 9-3 in favor of UNCG. The beginning of the third quarter would be fairly quiet as the Mountaineers stormed back in the later part of the third quarter and the fourth. However, UNCG's offense proved too much and torched the Mountaineer defense for 17 goals. The final score would be 17-11, a Spartan victory. Despite the loss, the strong second half showed that ASU can play with good teams. The several young starters and reserves showed much promise for the future of the team and the Mountaineers expect to win big games this year. The last game of the fall season will be at UNC Charlotte, and SELC North Division rival, at 3pm. Directions will be posted so all loyal fans can be there to cheer ASU on one last time in 2009! Second Annual King of the Mountain Tournament a Success - Nov 3, 2009 Despite the rain and clouds, the second annual King of the Mountain Tournament was a huge success! Appalachian State University, Lees-Mcrae College, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and Southern Virginia University converged on a rainy State Farm Fields for some exciting lacrosse. The first game featured the host ASU and the NCAA DII Lees-Mcrae Bobcats in a high octane game. The Bobcats came out strong, scoring the first three goals, but the Mountaineers would fight back, bringing the game close several times before eventually falling by a margin of 9-5. The Mountaineers then lost a game to the UNC Tar Heels but were able to win the final match against SVU to conclude the day at 1-2. Lees-Mcrae won all of their games to come away 3-0, while UNC finished 2-1, and SVU 0-3. Despite the records and scores, the biggest winner was the HEADstrong foundation, which was able to raise money off of merchandise sold to loyal fans who came out despite the conditions. Thanks to the wonderful guests who came and made the tournament a huge success and also to the fans who cheered their teams on. Special thanks to the AppaLax booster club that provided support, refreshments, and camera work for everyone! Come watch the Apps in Greensboro on November 8th as they take on UNCG in another fund raising day for HEADstrong!
